Boat Fishing in Jersey Channel Islands

When I was 16 years old a friend told me of a job which was up for grabs, this being a crew man on a charter boat which is skippered by Tony Heart boat named Anna 2. This sounded like my dream job as I was mad into my shore fishing, but I never seemed to catch anything decent, unless you class a mackerel as a decent fish? I got the job and when I had finished my first shift I knew that this was something I wanted to carry on doing for as long as I could. After a few months my shore and boat fishing improved so much, you can learn so much about angling when you are teaching other anglers how to do it and speaking daily with other anglers all about fishing! Of course it helps when your boss has been fishing locals waters for decades! I crewed for two years I even gave up college so I could get a full season in the following year. Some people might have said this was silly, but I thought the complete opposite. I felt that passionate about angling I just had to be out at sea helping others catch fish. What would you rather do take in that fresh air every day catching fish and loving life or revising for your next exam?! Times move on and you do have to take a step back and think about your future more seriously and financially, which I have done now but I wouldn't change anything from my past.

Royston & Avril (Local Anglers) At anchor fishing for some Rays!
What does Jersey have to offer boat anglers? I think the question should be where do you want to start? I will start with our charter boats on the island and what times of year is best to target certain species of fish and when the specimens are likely to turn up. Jersey only has two charter boats Anna 2 & Theseus II both skippers are fantastic and both can accommodate nearly every form of fishing. The fishing is so good in Jersey these guys get booked up months in advance from visiting anglers from Europe and tourists so you have to make sure you book up well in advance.
Drift fishing for turbot is very popular, turbot is a very hard fighting flatfish which hold high commercial value. Both pleasure anglers and fisherman take part in rod fishing for them around the Islands, these fish can grow over 20lb and this is possible around the coast of Jersey. Many 10lb+ fish come up yearly so you would always be in with a chance.

I would say the average sized turbot is 4-6lb and the best months to be in with your best chance of catching a specimen fish would be April, May & June but you can catch them all year round. I have personally had Turbot over 10lb in January in F6 winds so even if you cant make it over in the warmer months, there is always a chance during the winter months.  You can get over 5 turbot in a session when the fishing is good and whilst you are waiting for them to bite you will also be in with a chance of many other species including brill,  tub gurnard, red gurnard, whiting & the odd bass. From experience I have always liked using mackerel fillet for bait, I even favour mackerel over a live sandeel for them.

Bottom fishing at anchor is another type of fishing which is probably my favorite form of boat fishing, its a bit more relaxing you are in no rush to get your baits in the water before you miss the drift or having to rush to get a new rig tied on. Black bream can be targeted from April right through to September the bigger specimens seems to show up April & May where fish well over 4lb can be caught, 3lbers also getting landed regularly. These are a very hard fighting fish, the best places for them seem to be in deep water around 140-180ft deep and they never give up the fight! The best bait to use is squid strips with small circle hooks.

Larger fish like tope and conger eels can be caught over the same ground you are catching the bream which tends to be a hard rocky reef bottom. I have seen a few reef caught congers over 40/ 50lb over the years, and many tope over 30lb. Another usual suspect are bullhuss which will pick up your heavy bottom gear these are normally over 8lb in weight and they are a beautifully marked shark species.

My personal favorite are smooth hounds! Many anglers think that smoothhounds roam around in the shallow waters but this is not always the case, I have had them in 180ft of water and I have had quite a few over the 10lb mark. I would have broke the Channel Island record twice in one week if I had chosen to kill the fish but never personally liked the idea of killing a shark species just for my name to be on paper and as Tony the skipper is part of the UK Shark tagging program I was also supporting this cause so every shark is tagged & released. Hermit crabs & hard back green crabs seem to be the best baits but we do pick up a good amount on squid baits each year.

Jersey has one of the largest tidal range's in the whole of the UK with high tides rising to over 40ft, this is possibly why our ray fishing is so good! Undulate rays seem to be on the increase as a commercial landing ban has been in place for a couple of years stopping all local fisherman landing them, many double figure fish turn up during the course of the year normally over rough ground. Blonde rays are my favorite ray species as they can grow so big these magnificent fish can grow to weights close to 40lb and regular 20lb + fish are caught each year! I have personally had them to 32lb, I find its normally best when the tide is running strong and you are having to use 2lb of lead just to hold bottom.

Small eyed rays would also be a common catch whilst fishing the sand banks and fish over 10lb can be found, thornback rays on the other hand are very uncommon in Jersey but when they do show up they so seem to be big as the only one I have ever caught weighed 16lb 8oz!

Our wreck fishing can be very good we have a a large number of wrecks to fish around the channel islands, Guernsey gets the better pick of them as it seems we are always heading in that direction to get to most of them and it can take a couple of hours to get to them. The closest ones which holds big fish are around 10 miles off shore these hold big Pollock, Ling & Conger Eels.

Live sandeels seem to be a pollacks favored food over the soft lures  but red gills and savage gears are very popular! Our current pollock record is over 21lb which fell to a red gill lure so you don't always need the live bait. I have experienced days with well over 50/60 pollock being landed, it is best going with a charter boat as they have licences to sell there catch to the local market. If you are a visiting angler nothing will get wasted as sometimes reeling them in from the depths affects the swim bladders which makes it difficult to release them.
Smaller boats like Orkney's, Ribs & Kayaks offer something completely different from all this heavy rod fishing malarkey. You can get right amongst the shallow ground to the south east coast of Jersey which hold lots of Bass this place is named "the gutters"  many double figure bass are boated each year on lures and you could catch on any form of soft or hard plastic fishing lures or the "old school method" which is drifting around with a live sandeel. My favored lure is a white pearl 42 gram savage gear I like the way I can work all different depths to try and locate the fish and also keep myself in with a chance of picking up ballan wrasse which feed close to the bottom!
Here is angler & friend Callum Robertson with a cracking lure caught bass he caught last summer in the "gutters" on a very small Xlayer, this fish weighed a cracking 12lb 12oz - 79cm in length caught on a 4" Ayu Xlayer 7g Bachi Head. Ballan Wrasse over 5lb can be caught regularly which provides great sport for the lure fisherman, some days 30 wrasse in a session is standard. Kayak fishing is very popular in Jersey, being such a small island you can easily launch your kayaks around many of the beaches and harbors.

Because I like to mix things up a little now I try and target different species of fish I really enjoy targeting fish which is normally unheard of whilst boat fishing, St Aubins Bay you can find mullet roaming the shallow waters I really enjoy targeting them! More so the thin lipped species which you can catch using mepp spinners and white cat worm for bait, I have witnessed and netted thin lips over 6lb from the kayak.

Another of my favorite fish to target is the Trigger fish some years they come in shore and is a possible target for us anglers, the typical time of year would be August and September.  You do need a bit of luck as some years they dont show up at all but it is always worth a try. There is not many places in the British Iles these fish can be a target for boat anglers. They can turn up anywhere but there is a couple of locations where it is possible to catch up to 10 a session. Nothing is ever a guarantee that's why it is called fishing and not catching but I have managed a good few over the years the biggest weighing 3lb 7drams.

Many thanks for reading here are some links to Jersey's charter boats.

I am back on the Rock!!

With my first session planned Monday 10th Aug after work, my plan was to hit up St Catherine's Breakwater. I saw the tides looked perfect for a chance of an Undulate Ray with the possible Smooth Hound to target also. I picked up UK fresh water match angler Tom Downing from his campsite where he is staying for a holiday for 2 weeks and of we went.

With not shore fishing in 30 days from Jersey...Yes 30 days wow I was pretty keen to get the rods in the water. We went near the end of the Breakwater on the lower wall and I wacked out two whole squid baits as far as I could on single hooked running ledger rigs.

I made up a bread shirvy and started to ground bait for a Mullet at the same time, my left rod had a bite and I left it for a good 10 minutes to see if anything progressed. Well luckily it started to bend right over on the railings. I picked my rod up and waited for a strong pull down and gave it a good strike. Fish on straight away I guessed Undulate Ray and after a nice fight it was easily netted by Tom. I said "we are in the right place mate your turn next" so after weighing pictured and released it went back in the water to live another day

8lb 11oz Undulate Ray

I got my rod back in the water with my 2nd rod still out on its first cast. Half way through setting up some mackerel feathers on my 3rd rod my rachet went on my 2nd rod! Ohhh this looks like a Ray bite also, again picked up waiting for a good strong pull down and strike FISH ON! This rod is a bit lighter than the previous rod I had caught my last fish. One was 4-8oz Anyfishanywhere 6&bait and the one I have just hooked the 2nd fish on is a Penn PTT Viper 4-8oz, this fish was diving a little harder and stayed deeper during the whole fight. I guessed it was going to be a double figure fish and it surfaced I could tell it was close or it was indeed a 10lb+ fish. After a little struggle getting it in the net because it got a bit twisted we soon sorted it out and got straight in :)

10lb 4oz Undulate Ray

I re-baited the rod up after returning the fish and then started feeding up some mullet with the help of local angler Steve Mullins, he knows a thing or two about mullet he was helping me ground bait as I started targeting them with bread flake under a float. After 10 minutes of missing bites I was into one I managed to sight hook around 3lb 8oz with the tide being so slow it was a struggle to fight and play the fish into a position I could get the net under the fish. So after a couple of minutes fighting and me trying to bully it a bit to much the hook popped out the mouth :(
I passed the rod over to Tom let him get frustrated for a bit well 30 minutes of missing bites and darkness coming in making seeing the float hard work we returned to focus on the big baits. Steve Mullins had caught us a few scad for bait on my 3rd rod, moaning that the rod was too heavy for him  he still did a fine job. Tom had caught a few mackerel also so that is his breakfast sorted as well as some bait we moved onto the back wall. I put out a Conger Rod and 1 Ray rod out. It went very quiet and time started to go quicker it was 10.30pm and I had a bite on my Ray Rod, I struck into it what I thought was a small dogfish not fighting with a lump of weed on also. Coming over the wall I soon realized it was no dogfish and it was a small Starry Smooth Hound YAY my first for the year.

Packed up the rods and called it a day.

Wednesday 12th August I met up with Alex Plaster for a quick session on the Lures after work, only planned to fish till 6pm from 5pm so had to try and get a few fish in on Jersey's South Coast.

We headed down to a new mark for Alex, I know that Bass, Wrasse & Pollock can be targetted on lures here aswell as Garfish and Mackerel. Started off very quiet with not much action on the 42g Savage Gear Sandeels. We changed over tactics in a gully out of the strong winds, and we both hit into some Ballan Wrasse. So we did not blank and we called it a day and got some good cardio in on the walk back up the steep cliff.

Cheers for reading :)

January - July Catch Up!

Thought I would try and get all up to date on here with what I have been catching, to be honest I haven't been doing too much fishing compared to other years moving into a  new flat saving up and other things have got in the way a little. But I have tried to pick my tides and time that with the weather conditions to give my self the best chances of catching when I am getting out fishing.

I always sneak in a session with Tony Heart on Anna 2. We went out targeting Flatfish on some deep sand banks, we had a few surprises along the way here is myself with my personal best Garfish weighing 1lb 14oz Garfish, I did catch it on Feathers but I aint complaining.

I caught our Garfish action on the Gopro! We had around 15 gars over 1lb in like 5 minutes! "Garfish Galore" Check it out!

After this superb action we managed to nail a good few flatfish :)

I managed a Brill, but I wasn't lucky enough to catch a whiting myself but a few was caught.

I am going to stick on the subject of Boat fishing for now as makes sense to me on the 6th of April Mark Andre invited me out on his boat for a spot of wreck fishing. We managed loads of Pollock and a Ling, as well as my first Black Bream of the year and a few other bits and bobs all in all was lovely weather and a great day out :)

 2lb 8oz Black Bream

Savage Gear Sandeel did the business for most fish caught!

We started catching Bass on lures pretty early in the season

The 24th of March is when I managed to hook into my first one of the year! 3lb 4oz (53cm) White Pearl 42g Savage Gear Sandeel

Lee Jarvis came with me to one of my high water Bass marks where he showed me how its done with this cracking Bass!

My first surface lure caught Bass for the year only a small one but good fun to watch them come out and strike on the surface! The lure was a very small popper I got from Bass Pro Shops in Florida so unsure of its name but it worked a treat :)

A few schoolies I caught one morning before work

St Helier Harbor producing the early morning bass on Hard Lures! Ended up with 6 Bass all caught in about an hour
New Spot produces the Bass for Adrian, we also managed quite a few wrasse nothing that big though.

The Harbor on this occasion produced the goods on a Homemade Soft Plastic Lure.

Sneaked out of a late night lure bash! Boom lure bouncing jig heads around when its pitch black :)

Another one from the harbor always Bass around the Harbor :)

I had my little brother for a day as took him on his school walk, then we decided to have a fish! We fished the flooding tide in the Harbor, I managed a small Bass then on the next cast I let my brother reel in what is his First Bass :)

He also produced the goods during a Sinkers Junior Competition where he managed to win with the 2lb Ballan Wrasse!

On the subject of Wrasse I have managed a few mainly early on in the season when I was putting a little bit more time on it (Mainly focusing on soft plastics)
This one below is the biggest so far only weighing 4.8lbs though. Fished weedless style 12g cone head and weedless hooks with a 4" Blue paddle tail. Cant beat Bass Assassin Lures now on Sale in my Tackle Heaven eBay store check out by clicking the link above. I also have listed Lunker City Shakers which is another popular choice for me to use!!

Here is a few more :)

First wrasse of the year on Sam Chapon's LRF gear!

Now this is by far the Fattest Wrasse I have ever caught for its size!

Ray fishing has been hard work I have put many ray baits out over the course of the year with little reward compared to previous years. Luckily I managed 1 good session down St Caths Breakwater producing a

14lb 0oz Undulate Ray first Ray of the year on my first cast that evening. Fish took Garfish Fillet on a Pully Rig

12lb 8oz Undulate Ray I also lost a small one on the surface in the same session, so it was a good one :)

Caught on Sakuma Hooks!

Muuuullllllllllllllllllllllllleettttttttttttt

Right so because I have a slight addiction for my mullet I have been on them quite alot managing good results on nearly every trip. I am not going to go into detail because there is no need! Mainly caught float fishing bread flake around 12ft deep, with constant bread and water ground bait going in handful every 10 mins. Had a few whilst ledgering from the bottom also so just including all the pictures together :)

Lee Jarvis with a Thick Lipped well over 4lb

That's a better one 5lb 4oz!

One for the Tackle Heaven Species Competition

Long and skinny! Thought it would have gone 5lb but it was not to be.

Here she is my new Personal Best Mullet weighing 5lb 11oz (New Personal Best) I will get a 6lber before the year's end! Confidence is key!

I have found these have come in handy for the Mullet Ledgers! Check these out - Fladen Swivel Float Adapters

This is probally the most skill I have used to find a Spurdog from the shore in jersey! I dont think one has been caught since 1980s. Somehow I worked out exactly where they was going to show up on this day where I had my first ever Spurdog weighing 3lb 8oz (4th May)

God knows how I manged this one still made up to bits for catching it over here! But apparently I have more Jam than Hartleys :D

I have a fair amount of Go Pro footage for you guys soon, I will spend sometime when I am on holiday soon to get a couple of video's made. :) Here is a early season Bream I caught 1lb 8oz.

I have not done any Eel fishing at all yet this year well apart form a couple of casts hoping to get lucky. But me and Alex both put a rod out on this night and he had the only bite of the night!
